13 January - New Year 2007

13 January - Christmas & New Year

We did pretty much the same for new year as we did for christmas, we found a spot on one of the Chichime islands and had a bar-b and a big fire, all washed down with a fair bit of booze. I think we all only just made it until 12.00 and had to take a pre new year night time dip in the sea to try and keep us awake! We headed back to our boats just after 12, last of the late nighters! We were really glad that we all made the effort to meet up again for christmas and the new year as we had a lovely time.

We left Chichime on 2nd January, just to give us a little recovery time. I think this has to be one of the sickest journeys I have had yet! It was only a 60 mile journey which we took over night again, this time along with Adagio and Osprey. Pagos were very efficient and managed to leave on the 1st! A gale off of Colombia caused there to be a large swell about 10-12 ft which seemed to manage to hit us from every direction possible, its the first time that I haven't sat all my watches. Stuart stayed on most of the night whilst I wallowed in bed downstairs! The wind was pretty strong too and was coming from behind so we flew along and made it to Portobelo in record time, so that was the only consolation for me, that a least we got there quicker!

We were fully anchored by 2am so it only took us 10 hours to get there. We found out the next day that I wasn't the only one to suffer, salty sea dog Ken was ill all night to, and he has had a lot more experience at sea than me. Also Mary never gets sea sick and even she said she felt pretty bad. So I don't feel as rubbish now, it wasn't just me! We spent a couple of days in Portobelo again then we all headed back to Colon.

The others are all going through the canal and off to travel the Pacific, so they all need to get cracking on that and we have to pick up Stuart's passport and sign out then we can head off again. We have some friends from Scotland (Andy and Caroline) coming out to visit in mid February, so we need to head up to Honduras to meet them. We're really looking forward to it, although the sea has been pretty rough for the last week or so now and doesn't look as though it is going to calm down anytime soon. So we could have a very uncomfortable journey back up, which I'm not soo much looking forward to. We will keep our fingers crossed that the weather calms down in the next couple of days.
